ARTIST STATEMENT

I find solace in Oregon's natural world.  Shapes, lines and shadows draw me in, haunting to paint them, while I listen to sounds of water, wind, birds and rustling leaves.  As an artist with many hats, I worked for years in the commercial whitewater rafting industry.  Because of the friendships I made boating, I had numerous opportunities to participate on private river trips.  I rafted and camped down rivers in Alaska, Idaho, Arizona, and California.  Yet out of all the rivers and back country I explored, the Rogue River of Oregon remains my favorite.  The Rogue stands out as peaceful, untamed, protected, respected and cared for.  The beauty and wild inhabitants are outstanding in an ever changing environment as the days down the river wind west toward the sea.  My plein air paintings of Oregon's landscape transformed into intuitive responses on a larger scale.  The paintings I created here became subconscious metaphors for imagery that now appear in my abstract paintings.
