STUART HENDERSON

May 10 - June 22, 2014

Local artist Stuart Henderson creates paintings that are richly constructed with ethereal abstract textures, word and delicate representational imagery. His compositions are dynamic and well balanced, and the overall effect is a mesmerizing, visual language that skillfully captivates viewers attentions. In contemplation, viewers experience a sense of yin and yang, where passive unconscious reflection of the abstract pits against conscious illumination of such social ills as injustice, war, and the wrath of ecological destruction. Ultimately, through these paintings Henderson masterfully depicts a world that evokes a striking sense of non-complacency in universal awareness.

ARTIST STATEMENT

While I have work in many collections, selling paintings has seemed secondary to my own process of breaking through self imposed barriers and developing a personal vision.

Painting is a liberating process – it can free the subconscious mind with surprising rewards and help me transcend personal aesthetic limitations.  When I begin to paint I hold a vague idea, but the vision soon breaks down as I respond to the effect of the last stroke.  Intuition and memory are my guides, and the evolving imagery is “found” by the process of painting.

I try to heed my belief that art should be, in some sense, confrontational, so the evolution of a piece usually "finds" a personal narrative,  Often referring to my reaction to events of the day.  For the viewer, meaning lies somewhere in the tension between ambiguity and certainty as well as line, shape and color.
