ARTIST STATEMENT
Call and Response has a dual meaning in relation to my exhibition this summer at the Kenneth B Gallery. Quite literally, I use a call and response process in creating paintings.  I start with a feeling or concept - often a search for calmness in a chaotic world - then set parameters, such as size of canvas, media and palette, and finally begin to paint.  While painting, I am responding to the images on the canvas and am very much engaged in an ongoing visual conversation until the work is completed.  The second meaning, again quite literal, is that I lived in Lane County for several years and attended the University of Oregon, where I completed a PhD.  When I received the call to show paintings at Kenneth B, I joyfully responded with a resounding yes.  It is a pleasure to be returning to and showing art in Oregon!
